Blackfriars Partnership go to Holy Island
 
Members of the Blackfriars Partnership joined together with Partnership Lead Fr Mariadass and Fr John on Saturday 19th September for an outing to Holy Island.
45 people from across the 9 churches of the partnership – St Robert’s, English Martyrs, St Cuthbert’s Kenton, St John Vianney, St Cuthbert’s Throckley, St Mark’s, St Bede’s, St George’s and St Matthew’s - gathered on a very windy but bright and sunny day for the trip which was organised by members of the partnership.
 
We travelled together on a really comfortable coach taking advantage of the great opportunities to chat together and exchange news – and to share in prayers and rosary together on the coach. The travel company, GoJoyHolidays.co.uk, had also provided some delicious cakes and treats for each person which all added to the enjoyment of the day.
 
Despite the strong winds, everyone enjoyed exploring the island’s attractions and special places, including a free visit to Lindisfarne Castle as part of the weekend’s Heritage Open Days. The island’s beauty, peace, stillness and spiritual heritage were reflected in our walks along the ancient rocky coastline and through the wildflowers and birdlife of the nature reserve. Echoes of St Aidan and the Northern Saints could be seen and felt among the historic ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, while looking out towards St Cuthbert’s Isle, and in the peace and stillness of the ancient parish church of St Mary the Virgin.
 
The Partnership community enjoyed the welcoming hospitality of Holy Island’s Catholic Church of St Aidan for refreshments in the afternoon. Before the Celebration of Mass in St Aidan’s, Pete, one of the parishioners from St Robert’s, gave us a fascinating glimpse into the history of St Aidan’s highlighting its beautiful stained-glass windows and ornate wood altar, reredos and panelling.
 
The day culminated in a moving community celebration of Mass underlining the togetherness and unity of the partnership group. A lovely day enjoyed by all.
